  1. Euclid : the creation of mathematics

    Artmann, Benno
    New York : Springer, ©1999.

The philosopher Immanuel Kant writes in the popular introduction to his philosophy: "There is no single book about metaphysics like we have in mathematics. If you want to know what mathematics is, just look at Euclid's Elements." (Prolegomena Paragraph 4) Even if the material covered by Euclid may be considered elementary for the most part, the way in which he presents essential features of mathematics in a much more general sense, has set the standards for more than 2000 years. He displays the axiomatic foundation of a mathematical theory and its conscious development towards the solution of a specific problem. We see how abstraction works and how it enforces the strictly deductive presentation of a theory. We learn what creative definitions are and how the conceptual grasp leads to the classification of the relevant objects. For each of Euclid's thirteen Books, the author has given a general description of the contents and structure of the Book, plus one or two sample proofs. In an appendix, the reader will find items of general interest for mathematics, such as the question of parallels, squaring the circle, problem and theory, what rigour is, the history of the platonic polyhedra, irrationals, the process of generalization, and more. This is a book for all lovers of mathematics with a solid background in high school geometry, from teachers and students to university professors. It is an attempt to understand the nature of mathematics from its most important early source.

CD-ROM is an interactive identification and information system for all southern Australian eucalypts (690 taxa). EUCLID includes the species in southern Western Australia and western South Australia as well as those south-eastern species covered in the first edition. The new edition of EUCLID is an interactive identification and information system for all southern Australian eucalypts (689 taxa). Covering more than two thirds of the species, EUCLID 2nd Edition includes the species in southern Western Australia and western South Australia as well as those south-eastern species covered in the first edition of EUCLID. The latest Lucid Player ensures an easy-to-use and simple means of naming a eucalypt plant (or specimen) using whatever information is available. A total of 113 characters, covering the morphology - habit, bark, leaves, flowers, fruits, buds and seeds - and some geographic and ecological information ensure the reliability of the key. Interpretation of the character information is assisted with help notes and images featuring colour or line drawings. Easy to navigate HTML fact sheets for each species include a botanical description, common name, the formal scientific name together with nomenclatural synonyms, geographic and ecological information, and notes covering relationships, distinguishing features and other species it might be confused with. This information is complimented with over 6500 high quality colour images covering each species, illustrating all the main features of the plant, and a map showing natural distribution. What's new in the 2nd Edition? Inclusion of all the species of the south-western part of the continent (SA and WA); 689 taxa in total (an additional 365 taxa in this edition); Now more than 6500 colour images (actually 6756); Additional geographic characters relating to new areas covered; Photos of seeds are included for all species; Updated 'Notes' section for all species, including relationship information on subgroups to which each species belongs and why. Other features; Developed from the Australian National Herbarium database of 60 000 specimens, plus glasshouse studies of juvenile morphology and extensive field observations; The latest Lucid Player version 2.2 with HTML facilities including web searching.
