Discourses and strategies : the role of the Vienna school in shaping Central European approaches to art history & related discourses

This book consists of essays on the Vienna School's impact on Central European art history, Walter Benjamin's move from transhistoricism to historical relativism, Jacob Burckhardt's legacy and its metamorphoses, two competing conceptions of the social history of art, and Ernst Gombrich's life long struggle against metaphysics. All share a common denominator: concern with the trajectories of art historical ideas and their ideological instrumentality. However, the author's aim in analysing the premises and intentions of art historical discourse is not to undermine the credibility of art history by reducing it to total epistemological relativism. The historiography of art historical theories and critical reflection on their ideological background is understood by the author as an auxiliary art historical subdiscipline.

Aufklärungsdiskurse in der deutschsprachigen Regionalpresse Zentraleuropas, 1800-1920 = L'héritage des Lumières dans la presse de langue allemande en Europe centrale, 1800-1920

"Die in diesem Band vereinigten Beitrâge befassen sich mit deutschsprachigen Zeitungen Zentraleuropas im „langen 19. Jahrhundert" unter dem Blickwinkel des Fortwirkens von Aufklârungsideen in der Regionalpresse der habsburgischen Monarchie. Hervorragende Sachkenner analysieren den Transfer aufgeklârter Konzepte in der zentraleuropâischen Presse. Zugleich wird die Frage gestellt, ob es eigene Vorstellungen von Aufklârung in diesen Regionen gab. Die hier enthaltenen Aufsâtze in deutscher Sprache sind mit franzâsischen und englischen Zusammenfassungen verséhen. L'héritage des Lumières dans la presse de langue allemande en Europe centrale, 1800-1920. Les articles réunis dans le présent volume s'intéressent aux journaux de langue allemande ayant paru en Europe centrale au cours du "long me siècle" et aux survivances de l'esprit des Lumières repérables dans la presse régionale de l'empire des Habsbourg. D'éminents spécialistes analysent le transfert des idées "éclairées" dans la presse centreuropéenne et posent la question de l'existence de modèles propres de l'Aufklârung dans cette partie de l'Europe.
