Gerhard Samuel Collection

The conductor and composer Gerhard Samuel (1924-2008), of German-Jewish origin, arrived to the U.S. as a young boy and enjoyed a first-rate education with key figures in the music world such as Paul Hindemith at Yale and Serge Koussevitzky at the Tanglewood Music Festival in Massachusetts. Samuel’s Collection documents his conducting career with the Oakland Symphony (1959-71), the San Francisco Ballet (1961-71), and the Los Angeles Philharmonic as associate conductor under Zubin Mehta; but it also documents his indefatigable drive to further and perform contemporary as with the Cabrillo Music Festival of which he was the first musical director. Of particular importance in the collection are Samuel’s original music manuscripts, sketches, revised copies, and first editions with the artist’s conducting markings. Samuel’s legacy also includes a valuable collection of reel to reel recordings of the concerts he conducted; and among the archival media there are photographs, diaries, and an impressive list of original letters from such figures such as Aaron Copland, Paul Hindemith, Darius Milhaud, and Serge Koussevitzky.
