Visit our website for sample chapters!.Japanese historian, Ienaga Saburo, fought three lawsuits (1965-1997) against the government seeking to end the Ministry of Education certification of textbooks, which constrains disscussion of Japan's action in China and elsewhere in the Pacific. The cases arose from government censorship of Ienaga's textbook accounts of the Pacific War and of controversial events like the Nanjing massacre. He forced questions into the public areana that are central to the nature of Japanese democracy and to issues of war and memory. This autobiography of Ienaga Saburo, traces his childhood, education, wartime experiences, academic career and two major battles that occupied his later years. One was the fight against the relocation of Tokyo University of Education to a research city outside Tokyo; the other was the fight against certification. Neither battle ended in victory, but Ienaga felt them fights woth fighting.
