  2. Karaite marriage documents from the Cairo Geniza : legal tradition and community life in mediaeval Egypt and Palestine

    Olszowy-Schlanger, Judith
    Leiden ; New York : Brill, 1998.

This is a comprehensive study of legal, historical and economic aspects of marriage as practised during the Middle Ages, in Egypt and Palestine, by members of a distinct Jewish movement known as Karaism. This study is based on original Hebrew medieval manuscripts recovered from the Cairo Geniza. Edited translations of 65 manuscripts, most of them previously unpublished, are included in the second part of the book. A detailed and accessible analysis of their content, language, formulation and palaeography is provided, seeking to shed new light on Karaite legal and linguistic tradition, and providing a source for the understanding of early Karaism, and of medieval Jewish history in general.

  3. Learning Hebrew in medieval England : Christian scholars and the Longleat House Grammar

    Olszowy-Schlanger, Judith
Toronto, Ontario : Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies, [2023]

"Scholars in England in the Middle Ages understood the value of studying languages and their grammar, and the Hebrew language was theologically relevant and ideologically potent. Because it was difficult to procure Hebrew bibles, dictionaries and grammar manuals, some Christian scholars created their own manuals and textbooks with the help of Jewish teachers. This volume presents an edition, facsimile, and analysis of one such learning tool, a succinct Hebrew grammar written in Hebrew, Latin, and Anglo-Norman French in England in the thirteenth century."--
