  1. Germany. Soldier's photograph albums, circa 1932-1934

The four albums hold a total of 471 photographs and real-photo postcards. -- Album 1. Meine Dienstzeit [My Service]- cover title. Oblong 4to album, padded cloth with small metallic German Army helmet (with swastika emblem) mounted on the front cover. Album recording the owner’s initial training, in the cavalry corps, at the Army’s military training base at Sennelager (North Rhine-Westphalia). Consists of 143 images, including 17 real-photo postcards showing training of cavalry soldiers (on both horses and bicycles) in “Senne/1932.” As evident from the uniforms, this was just before the Nazi’s came to complete power… but as the Nazi-themed album cover demonstrates, by the time of assembling this album, the Nazis had taken control of the army. This album shows facilities, training, recreation at camp and in the town, marches, etc. -- 2. Untitled album. Oblong 4to album with striped cloth cover (some spotting). Consists of 108 photographs mounted on ten leaves. Combination of military maneuvers and socializing—among military companions as well as with civilians. While the winged-eagle with the swastika appears as a pin on military caps, the Nazi shoulder patch has yet to appear, ca. 1933. -- 3. Untitled album. Oblong 4to, original cloth and leather, with string tie. With 135 photographs on 17 leaves. Many scenes of fraternizing with fellow soldiers, military drills, visits to some old (WWI?) battle scenes, plus many pictures of civil friends. A few photographs beginning to show the Nazi party arm patch appearing on the left-arm of uniforms, ca. 1933. -- 4. Aus meiner Dienstzeit [From My Service]—cover title. Oblong 8vo album with title stamp on cover as well as Nazi Party emblem (in black); cloth, with string tie. Consists of 85 photographs on 16 leaves. Most of the photographs show life in an Army camp—and by this period, the Nazi emblems are now sewn onto the uniforms itself. Shows many activities in the camp. Also with four small photographs of Nazi Party rallies, ca. 1933/34? [Descriptive information provided by dealer]
