  1. Wellness in Whiteness Biomedicalization and the Promotion of Whiteness and Youth among Women

    Mire, Amina
    London : Taylor & Francis, 2018.

This book analyses the social and ethical implications of the globalization of emerging skin-whitening and anti-ageing biotechnology. Using an intersectional theoretical framework and a content analysis methodology drawn from cultural studies, the sociology of knowledge, the history of colonial medicine and critical race theory, it examines technical reports, as well as print and on-line advertisements from pharmaceutical and cosmetics companies for skin-whitening products. With close attention to the promises of 'ageless beauty', 'brightened', youthful skin and solutions to 'pigmentation problems' for non-white women, the author reveals the dynamics of racialization and biomedicalization at work. A study of a significant sector of the globalised health and wellness industries, Wellness in Whiteness will appeal to social scientists with interests in gender, race and ethnicity, biotechnology and embodiment.

  2. Equality struggles : women's movements, neoliberal markets and state political agendas in Scandinavia

    Liinason, Mia
Abingdon, Oxon ; New York, NY : Routledge, an imprint of the Taylor & Francis Group, 2018.

In recent times where European welfare states are undergoing serious economic and social crises and being increasingly exposed to criticism, there has been a noticeable revival of feminist interest in the issues of equality. Focusing on a signature aspect of Scandinavian welfare states, Equality Struggles explores how gender equality and women's rights are transforming the relationship between Scandinavian states and social actors. Indeed, drawing on in-depth analyses from fieldwork in Denmark, Norway and Sweden, this book examines the largest and most established women's organizations and develops a multi-layered understanding of the entanglements between women's movements, neoliberal markets and state political agendas in Scandinavia, as they give rise to feminist fractions and new feminist coalitions. Contributing to novel understandings of "equality struggles" within women's organisations, this title will appeal to postgraduate students and scholars interested in fields such as Scandinavian Studies, Gender Studies, Political Science and International Relations and Social Theory.
