Mediating in Cyprus : the Cypriot communities and the United Nations
Richmond, Oliver P.London ; Portland, OR : F. Cass, 1998.The UN peacemaking operation in Cyprus has been one of the longest of its kind. Yet it has resulted in little but discarded proposals, non-papers or reports. This study has set out to investigate the Cypriot parties' views of the process of peacemaking in order to shed light on the Cyprus problem, and on the theroretical debates on mediation, from a new angle. The author has clearly outlined the issues in three parts: the first part examines the theoretical debates surrounding mediation and develops the perspective provided by an examination of the views of the disputants. The second part provides an historical analysis until the outbreak of conflict in late 1963. Using this framework, part three provides a case study of the peacemaking process from 1964 to 1994.
