The great alliance : economic recovery and the problems of power, 1945-1951
Phillips, Jim, 1968-London ; East Haven, Conn. : Pluto Press, 1996.Reappraising the character of Britain's most successful Labour government, the author provides a study of the "Great Alliance" between the Labour Party and the trade unions during the post-war period. It reveals that the failure of Attlee's government to support the demands of the workers for increased wages and work security, in favour of the demands of the financial markets, undermined the popularity of the Labour Party that had swept them to power in 1945.
