Manchester : Manchester University Press, 2022.

Was there international law in the Middle Ages? This book examines the extent to which such a system of rules was known and followed in the period 700 to 1200. Taking treaties as its main source, it challenges traditional interpretations of the history of international law and how it functioned in a period before fully fledged nation states.

  2. Peacemaking in the Middle Ages : principles and practice

Manchester, UK ; New York : Manchester University Press ; New York : Distributed in the United States exclusively by Palgrave Macmillan, 2011.

*Peacemaking in the Middle Ages* explores the making of peace in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries based on the experiences of the kings of England and the kings of Denmark. From dealing with owing allegiance to powerful neighbours to conquering the 'barbarians', this book offers a vision of how relationships between rulers were regulated and maintained, and how rulers negotiated, resolved, avoided and enforced matters in dispute in a period before nation states and international law. This is the first full-length study in English of the principles and practice of peacemaking in the medieval period. Its findings have wider significance and applications, and numerous comparisons are drawn with the peacemaking activities of other western European rulers, in the medieval period and beyond. This book will appeal to scholars and students of medieval Europe, but also those with a more general interest in kingship, warfare, diplomacy and international relations.

It considers how consistently international legal rules were obeyed, whether there was a reliance on justification of action and whether the system had the capacity to resolve disputed questions of fact and law. The book further sheds light on issues such as compliance, enforcement, deterrence, authority and jurisdiction, challenging traditional ideas over their role and function in the history of international law.0International law in Europe, 700-1200 will appeal to students and scholars of medieval Europe, international law and its history, as well as those with a more general interest in warfare, diplomacy and international relationsWas there international law in the Middle Ages?
