Genre facet enhancement in updated SearchWorks index

August 17, 2017
J Vine

A new SearchWorks catalog index was released on Thursday, August 17, 2017. To ensure accuracy of the data in SearchWorks, we do a quarterly "fresh" indexing of all bibliographic data from Symphony (Stanford Libraries' integrated library system).

This quarter's new index includes an enhancement to the Genre facet: there are more terms indexed into this facet than previously.

The terms added to the Genre facet come from:

  • the MARC genre field (655);
  • the genre/form subdivision fields in subject headings (subfield v).

These terms are in addition to the controlled list of terms already in the Genre facet (Conference proceedings, Government document, Technical report, Thesis/Dissertation).

Genre facet after the enhancement

With this enhancement, users will be able to discover materials by the various genre terms present in bibliographic records. For example, users will have an easier time browsing feature films in the Media & Microtext Center that are new to the library, a common search among our users.
