Reunion Homecoming: Now in VR!

October 19, 2016

Every October, thousands of alumni descend on the Stanford campus to laugh, reminisce, catch up with old friends and colleagues, mourn any fallen community members, and introduce their families to an institution that was core to their personal and professional development. And every October for the past three years (and hopefully for many more), the University Archives has played an active role in connecting alumni visiting campus with the resources to tell their stories of what it meant, and therefore what it means, to be a Stanford student.

This is Reunion Homecoming. The Archives is hosting a number of events this year, including a major exhibition on student life, Google Cardboard giveaways, photo ops with the Stanford Family, and an oral history booth! Read below for more details.

Now on Exhibit: You!

This year, in conjunction with the 125th anniversary of Stanford University, the Archives is sponsoring a variety of events and exhibits across campus, all tied to the theme of Stanford Stories from the Archives. The largest of these exhibits, celebrating a history of student life with a focus on student activism and service, recently opened in Green Library's Peterson Gallery and Munger Rotunda.

Several companion exhibits, focused on Stanford Athletic Firsts (South Lobby, Green Library), Stanford Innovators (Bender Room, Green Library), and the Stanford Band (Arrillaga Alumni Center), will all be open to the public this week, offering a wealth of options for alumni and their families who are interested in looking back on their own histories at Stanford. The Stanford Band will be performing outside Arillaga Alumni Center on 9 AM, Saturday, October 22, in honor of the exhibit. On Sunday, additional exhibits in Memorial Church and at the Cantor Museum (Hall adjacent to the Stanford Family Room) will shed further light on the history of the campus and its founders.

Get your own Stanford-branded Google Cardboard

With support from Stanford University Libraries and Stanford 125, we are giving away Stanford-branded Google Cardboard virtual reality headsets from our booth at Ford Center, in honor of a 360° virtual reality film we produced that highlights 125 years of innovation at Stanford, Moments of Innovation: A Stanford Virtual Experience. A collaboration between the Stanford University Archives and three graduate students in Stanford’s documentary filmmaking program, the film seamlessly weaves together historical images and audiovisual materials from the Archives with 360° video footage of iconic Stanford locations and experiences. These are sure to go fast. Get one while they last!

Take a photo with the Stanford Family!

Cardboard cut-outs of the Stanford Family will be posted outside of Ford Center from Thursday to Saturday, and at the Cantor Museum on Sunday. Cozy up to Jane, Leland, and Leland Jr. for a selfie or group shot. Then share the pic online under the hashtag #stanfordfamilyreunion!

Share your Story!

We're interested in hearing from you! Share your Stanford story with us at our booth at Ford Center from Thursday until Saturday, or bring your historical materials with you to donate them or have them selectively scanned and returned! Not visiting campus this year? You can leave a brief audio recording detailing a story or memory from your time at Stanford on the Stanford Stories line: (415) 952-7241.
