Medieval Fragments and Interoperable Books: Recent Webinars from Special Collections

April 24, 2020
Benjamin L Albritton
Lisa Fagin Davis Webinar

While sheltering in place, the Rare Books Division of Special Collections has been working with colleagues around the country to produce content related to our collections or using technologies that allow sharing digital images across institutions. Here are three recent webinars from that effort:

1. Lisa Fagin Davis, executive director of the Medieval Academy of America, on Fragments and Fragmentology in the Twenty-First Century. Among the many collections Dr. Fagin Davis discusses, she includes the collection of Italian medieval miniatures assembled by Bob and Kathy Burke and several of our fragments once sold by Otto Ege (like our leaf from Peter Riga's 'Aurora' and leaves from a glossed New Testament). She also provides an overview of some of the many benefits of sharing content using the International Image Interoperability Framework for book historians. This webinar was produced in collaboration with Prof. Elaine Treharne and Dr. Agnieszka Backman of Stanford Text Technologies.

2. Benjamin Albritton, curator of rare books at Stanford Libraries, offered a series of webinars for the Bibliographical Society of America on the topic of using interoperable technologies in book history, starting with an overview of IIIF and the Mirador Viewer.

3. The second Bibliographical Society of America webinar on IIIF and book history focused on teaching with IIIF and Mirador.
