Databases of the week: Read all about it! Get your news here! Newspaper databases at SUL

Mr. James R. (Librarian) Jacobs

Everybody reads the news. The library has a long-standing interest in providing state, local, national, and foreign newspapers to the Stanford community in a variety of formats. Last month we wrote about historical newspaper databases. Some academic databases -- like Academic Search Premier, EBSCOHost, and Nexis Uni (formerly LexisNexis) -- include access to news within their larger holdings of journal literature, and one can search for individual newspaper titles in Searchworks. And SUL just recently made a deal with Washington Post to provide access to WaPo.com!

What many don't realize is that Stanford also has access to some very good, dedicated newspaper databases. Below are just the highlights.

  • Access World News (formerly Newsbank): full-text information and perspectives from over 600 U.S. and over 700 international sources, each with its own distinctive focus offering diverse viewpoints on local, regional and world issues. Date coverage varies with individual newspaper. Also includes thousands of broadcast transcripts, newswires, video clips, and news blogs.

  • FactivaA joint venture between Dow Jones & Reuters, Factiva provides access to global news and business information, including local newspapers, same-day newswires, company reports, and media programs.

  • ProQuest news & newspapersA database of articles from newspapers. This ProQuest indexes general databases, such as Alt-Press Watch, Ethnic NewsWatch, GenderWatch, US Hispanic Newsstand, as well as covering individual newspaper titles.

Check out the world of newspaper databases to which Stanford has access!
