Online Archive of California finding aid

Two new finding aids are now avaialble via the Online Archive of California and the collections are open for research. The Frances Blaisdell collection captures the trailblazing flute player Frances Blaisdell and the Jim Goggin collection captures select activities of the cofounder of the San Francisco Traditional Jazz Foundation

Highlights from the Frances Blaisdell collection include many scores with performance notes, but perhaps most exciting is the 6 scrapbooks she assembled that capture her work from 1925-1964 and the loose materials she saved from 1965 until 2005. The scrapbooks capture the experience, the efforts, and the types of performances Ms. Blaisdell was able to secure as she opened doors for women wind players in symphony orchestras and chamber music both in New York and the far west.

Jim Goggin was the driving force behind the creation of the San Francisco Traditional Jazz foundation and worked tirelessly to preserve the activities of the Bay Area Traditional Jazz community featuring the likes of Lu Watters and Turk Murphy through his writings and his work with the foundation. The Jim Goggin collection primarily captures his correspondence with a curator at the Smithsonian institution and the business cards he collected from the significant amount of musicians he met during his lifetime.

The processing of the collections was completed thanks to the work of Chris Walker with support from Benjamin Bates. Currently the Archive of Recorded Sound is only open for onsite research for select Stanford affiliates and via remote research inquiries from the general public.
