Peter Hiller, the Jo Mora Trust Collection Curator, has been enamored with the art of Joseph Jacinto "Jo" Mora (1876-1947) since he came upon Mora’s cartes (maps) in the mid 1990's - to the extent of having recently written an extensive biography about Jo published in October 2019 by the Book Club of California.
Hiller's immediate intrigue arose from his amazement at Jo Mora's creative versatility and the outstanding quality of Mora's artistic efforts. From pictorial maps, book illustrations, paintings, sculptures, printmaking and writing, Mora's artistic talents were boundless. After growing up on the east coast, Mora ventured west to explore what he considered to be the changing west of the cowboys and Indians he was so fascinated with as a child. Jo's later life centered around his artistic depicting of the history of California, his family and his abounding creative abilities which enabled him to provide food, clothing and shelter for them.
