A video recording of the 2016 ceremony in Stanford’s Green Library dedicating the Ampex videotape recorder as an IEEE Milestone is available at Engineering and Technology History Wiki, which states: “In 1956, Ampex Corporation of Redwood City, California, introduced the first practical videotape recorder for television stations and networks to produce and time-shift broadcasts, replacing impractical ‘kinescope’ movie film previously used to record TV.

In November, SUL staff focused on emergency preparedness, first by participating in the campus-wide QuakeSU emergency recovery drill, and then by holding evacuation drills for key buildings.
Due to the University's Winter Closure from Wednesday, December 21, 2016 - Tuesday, January 3, 2017, articles submitted for SUL News will be published on the following schedule:
- Articles submitted by 11:00 am, Wednesday, December 14 will be reviewed and published by December 14. An email announcement listing recent articles will be distributed on that day.
- Any articles submitted after the announcement email on December 14 - January 4, will be reviewed and published on Wednesday, January 4, 2017.
After the December 14 email announcement, the next SUL News email announcement listing recent articles will be distributed on Wednesday, January 4, 2017.
The 2016 winter closure begins Wednesday, December 21, 2016 and ends on Tuesday, January 3, 2017. Regular operations will resume on Wednesday, January 4, 2017. During this time, the following dates have been designated as University holidays:
