Metadata Development Unit Staff news

In the past several months, the Metadata Development Unit (MDU) in the Metadata Department underwent major staff expansion that broadened the unit’s foreign language expertise and the ability to create discovery and access metadata for the SUL collections in many additional languages and scripts. We are pleased to introduce our new colleagues to you. 

In June 2016, Behzad Allahyar joined MDU as the Metadata Librarian for Middle East Resources. He transferred from the Middle East unit where he worked since 2011. Behzad came to Stanford with several years of cataloging experience in acquisitions and cataloging.  Behzad received a bachelor's degree in Music from Tehran University, Tehran, Iran, and a master's degree in History from University of California, Los Angeles. In addition to fluency in Persian, he has working knowledge of Arabic, Azeri, Turkish, Spanish, and additional languages using Arabic script.

Asuman TezcanAsuman Tezcan photo also transferred from the Middle East unit to MDU in June 2016 as the Metadata Assistant for Turkish Resources. She received a bachelor's degree in Communication, a master's degree in Social Sciences, both from Gazi University, Ankara, Turkey, and a Ph.D. in Social Sciences from Ankara University, Ankara, Turkey. In addition to fluency in Ottoman Turkish and Turkish, Asuman has working knowledge of Arabic and Farsi.

Galina Lipkind Photo: Galina Lipkindjoined MDU last September as the new Metadata Assistant for Slavic and Western European Resources. Galina transferred from the Classification Unit of the Metadata Department where she had worked since 2011. Galina received a master’s degree in Linguistics from Moscow State University of Printing Arts in Moscow, Russia. In addition to Russian and other Slavic languages, Galina has knowledge of Hindi and Punjabi. She also assumed responsibilities as one of the Expert Partners in MDU.

Prema Desai Photo: Prema Desaicame to Stanford last November to fill the newly created position of the Metadata Librarian for South Asian Materials. She brought to the position five years of recent experience as Cataloger-Trainer at the Milner Library, Illinois State University, and over twenty years as Assistant Supervisory Librarian (Cataloging) at the U.S. Library of Congress Office, New Delhi, India. Prema received a bachelor’s degree in Economics and Mathematics from University of Delhi, New Delhi, India; a bachelor’s and a master's degree in Library and Information Science, both from Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi, India, and a master’s in Library and Information Science from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prema is fluent in English, Hindi, Kannada, and Marathi, and has reading skills and working knowledge of Sanskrit, Bengali, Gujarati, Tulu, Kodagu, Panjabi, and Urdu.

Leszek CzubikPhoto: Leszek Czubik has recently joined the Metadata Development Unit (MDU) as our new Metadata Librarian for Slavic Resources. This position was previously held by Inna Gudanets until her retirement in April of 2016. Leszek came to Stanford with more than 10 years of experience as a catalog librarian in academic libraries, most recently at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. Leszek received a bachelor's degree in Russian and East European Studies and a master's degree in Library and Information Science, both from University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada. In addition to fluency in Russian and other Slavic languages, he has working knowledge of Baltic languages, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Latin, and Greek. 

Lastly, last September the Classification unit in the Metadata Department started reporting to Margaret Hughes, Metadata Librarian for Humanities, Social Sciences & Africana in MDU, which brought the two units closer, and led to improvements in training and workflows. 

The Metadata Development Unit is thrilled to have Asu, Behzad, Galina, Leszek, and Prema on board along with Dan, Elad, and Dave in the Classification unit.
