Biafra Ahanonu

Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Biology

Biafra Ahanonu attended MIT, majoring in Biology and Brain & Cognitive Sciences. While there, he worked on a variety of projects such as intertemporal discounting in humans, odor chemotaxis and virtual reality in Drosophila, and DNA damage in neurons. He recently completed his PhD in Biology at Stanford in Mark Schnitzer's lab. He studies how neural circuits function normally and during disease, and he develops computational tools for calcium imaging analysis..

Robin Betz is a fifth year PhD candidate in the Biophysics program at Stanford, where she is advised by Ron Dror. She is interested in developing and applying new methods for molecular dynamics simulation and open-source software development. She holds a B.S. in Bioinformatics from UC San Diego.

Google Fellow

Ramanathan Guha is the founder and lead for DataCommons.org, a platform which synthesis a wide range of data sets into a single knowledge graph, for use by students and researchers. He is the creator of widely used web standards such as RSS, RDF and Schema.org. He is also responsible for products such as Google Custom Search. He was a co-founder of Epinions.com and Alpiri. He is currently a Google Fellow and vice president in research at Google. He has a Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University and a B.Tech in mechanical engineering from IIT Chennai.

Grant Kinsler is a third-year graduate student in the Department of Biology working with Dmitri Petrov. Grant is using a combination of theory, computational methods, and experimental evolution to understand how populations are able to rapidly adapt to new environments. Grant completed his undergraduate work in Applied Mathematics at Harvard University where he was advised by Martin Nowak.

He currently works in the Stanford Quake Lab, and his diverse scientific research interests include: metagenomics, marine biology, microbiomes, immunology, virology, developmental biology, infectious diseases and stem cell biology.

Professor Lele's research combines numerical simulations with modeling to study fundamental unsteady flow phemonema, turbulence, flow instabilities, and flow-generated sound. Recent projects include shock-turbulent boundary layer interactions, supersonic jet noise, wind turbine aeroacoustics, wind farm modeling, aircraft contrails, multi-material mixing and multi-phase flows involving cavitation. He is also interested in developing high-fidelity computational methods for engineering applications.

Ruth Marinshaw is CTO for Research Computing at Stanford University, leading the Stanford Research Computing Center (SRCC). Jointly reporting to the the Dean of Research and the Stanford CIO, Ruth and the SRCC team engage with researchers and technologists across a wide spectrum of disciplines to support a growing portfolio of research technologies and cyberinfrastructure services. Her team is focused on ensuring that all campus researchers have access to strong, sufficient, relevant and robust data and computational platforms and services to accelerate scientific discovery and scholarship, advancing Stanford's research mission. With more than 25 years of experience in supporting, managing and leading technology teams and programs in higher ed, Ruth is especially interested in extending the potential of high-end computing to research areas whose compute and analysis needs cannot be met by traditional HPC solutions.

Professor of Photon Science

Theoretical chemist Todd Martínez develops and applies new methods that predict and explain how atoms move in molecules. These methods are used both to design new molecules and to understand the behavior of those that already exist. His research group studies the response of molecules to light (photochemistry) and external force (mechanochemistry).

Dr. Lesley Park leads the Stanford Center for Population Health Sciences (PHS) Data Center, which aims to provide a central hub where researchers can efficiently access, link, visualize, and analyze data from a wide variety of sources to ultimately facilitate transdisciplinary population health science research. Dr. Park is also the co-director of the Veterans Aging Cohort Study (VACS) Cancer Core where she oversees cancer outcomes research in persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA).

Mark has been working at Stanford in research and software development for over 15 years. He has worked at The Genome Technology Center, HighWire Press, J. Craig Venter Institute, the Genetics Department, Stephen Montgomery's group and Vijay Pande's Lab on the Folding@home project. Mark is also an artist and teaches at the Ceramics Studio here on campus. Mark helps onboard and support research groups with our HPC systems.

Russell Poldrack is the Albert Ray Lang Professor in the Department of Psychology at Stanford. His research uses brain imaging techniques to understand the brain systems that support decision making and self control. He is also the director of the Stanford Center for Reproducible Neuroscience, which is dedicated to developing tools to help improve the openness, transparency, and reproducibilty of neuroscientific research.

Michael Timineri manages the portion of the Stanford Information Security Office (ISO) that oversees cybersecurity risk management, incident response, security assessments, security awareness training, penetration testing, forensic investigations, as well as security standards and regulatory compliance obligations. While Michael holds over 30 industry professional certifications, for this session he will be speaking with his “security hat on” as a Certified Computer Hacking Forensics Investigator, a Certified Ethical Hacker, a Certified Information Systems Auditor, a Certified Cybersecurity Analyst, and a Certified Information Security Professional… among others.
