About the center

Stairwell to the Rumsey Center. Walls are covered in murals of maps.Current Access

Our Center is currently closed to visitors.

However, those with Stanford IDs can still view our materials at the Libraries’ Special Collections reading room. You must first request materials through SearchWorks. Once your materials are ready, you will be notified by email to schedule an appointment.

Only Stanford affiliates with an active SUNet ID may page materials: e.g. Stanford professors (including emeriti), post-docs, graduate students, undergraduates, fellows, and visiting scholars.

Original + Digital

The Center opened in 2016 and provides a unique research, teaching, and learning environment where the antiquarian and modern converge. We have two wall-sized, high-resolution screens to help our visitors fully investigate items from our collection. You can expand and zoom into oversized digital copies, while viewing the original document at the same time. We welcome students, faculty, and members of the public to come visit us, explore our collection, see our exhibitions, and learn about historic maps.
