VIncent Kang assisting a patron in the Music Library

On October 1, Vincent Kang will begin a new, tenure-track position at Skyline College as Digital Instruction Librarian! We in the Music Library and Archive of Recorded Sound are at once sad at his departure, excited for his future, and a bit wistful about the many formative challenges our team overcame in the past few years. Vincent joined us as Operations Manager back in Fall 2017 and quickly became an indispensable member of the Music Library team. He set to work hiring and training new students, orchestrating a major stack shift, and digging into solving old bindery problems. He also worked on LibGuides, creating a well-received guide for researching art songs and lieder. And, as if he wasn’t busy enough, Vincent was awarded the Master of Information Science degree from Rutgers University in December 2021.

Vincent’s warmth and ready smile are known to many of you who have interacted with him at the Music Library, and on teams including the Concierge Advisory Group and on Folio implementation. As a participant in the Expert Partner program, Vincent also kept our public-facing computers running smoothly.

The Covid shutdown exerted particular pressure on SUL’s operations staff, including Vincent. As the campus slowly reopened in 2020-21, Vincent came to campus regularly to fulfill paging requests for books and scores, as well as to prepare titles for controlled digital lending. He certainly kept us well-stocked with emergency supplies (thank you!!). Vincent faced all challenges with a cheerful “we can figure it out!” attitude, to the great benefit of all those in the Stanford community who relied on continued library service during that most uncertain time.

Vincent’s warmth and generosity of spirit will be missed in the Braun Music Center. We wish him well as he takes the next step in his career in librarianship!
