We welcome everyone to reach out to us regarding our services. We prioritize support for Stanford University community members.
Teaching and research support
We support teaching with University Archives materials by actively seeking out opportunities to collaborate with faculty through in-person and remote instruction. We prioritize teaching and outreach opportunities that provide tangible educational benefits to Stanford community members.
We support teaching, learning, and research at the university and beyond through the creation of guides, online and in-person exhibits, and orientations and training sessions for community members to access sources that document the university’s history, including archival collections.
We further support the community through research consultations and reference services in collaboration with our colleagues across the Libraries, especially Public Services staff.
University program support
We support campus planning, programs, and projects, such as special events and anniversary celebrations, by partnering with campus units in the development of related programming, which might entail transferring materials, digitization, arrangement and description, online or in-person exhibit creation, and events.
University Archives often serves as Stanford Libraries’ initial point of contact with Stanford offices and departments. The Archives introduce and orient Stanford community members to library services beyond those solely provided by our unit. These might include conservation, metadata, or digitization services in collaboration with the Conservation unit, Metadata Department, Digital Library Systems and Services’ Product & Service Management team, the Digital Production Group, the Stanford Media Preservation Laboratory, and the Stanford Born-Digital Preservation Laboratory.
Archival records consulting
The University Archives consult across the university on active-records management for paper/analog or digital files as it relates to identifying, preserving, and ensuring future access to records of enduring historical value.
Contributing to Stanford’s collections
We work closely with colleagues in the Libraries and the Stanford Historical Society to identify opportunities and targets for collection acquisitions and oral history interviews.
The University Archives also partner with departments and programs across the Libraries and the university that serve to document the university and its research products—including honors theses, honors or capstone projects, and Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs). We work closely with other bibliographers to document the university’s impact through publications, and we maintain an active web-archiving program to preserve and ensure future access to Stanford’s historical web presence.
