Welcome Stanford Libraries high school interns

We’re excited to welcome seven East Palo Alto Academy students to this year's Stanford Libraries High School Internship Program, our largest group since the program's resurgence in 2021. This summer, the students will be placed in various locations within the Libraries including Conservation Services in Redwood City, the Earth Sciences Library including the Geoscience Specimens Collection group, Research Data Services, Green Library's Media and Microtext Center, and the East Asia Library.

On Monday, June 17, the students underwent a comprehensive orientation session and were treated to a special field trip to the renowned Deisseroth Lab (D-Lab) at the James H. Clark Center, led by Laboratory and Education Manager Maisie Lo. The lab is known for optogenetics, a revolutionary technique that uses light to control cells within living tissues, typically neurons, to advance our understanding of brain function. The tour allowed students to observe intricate setups of lasers, fiber optics, and microscopes used to precisely target and manipulate specific neural circuits in animal models. We're eager to hear more about Dr. Deisseroth and his team's research in the future. Thank you, Maisie!

The lab tour is one of many opportunities planned this summer aimed at giving the interns insight into college life and exposing them to the libraries and the various professions within a library. The program managers, Kelly Fields and Mario Pamplona, extend our appreciation to the supervisors who generously volunteered to mentor these students this summer, and we’re looking forward to hearing about the myriad projects they have planned over the next several weeks.
The interns will be a part of the Libraries until August, so please take a moment to introduce yourself and welcome them!
