Visiting the David Rumsey Map Center

Library hours 

The David Rumsey Map Center’s hours for drop-in visitors vary week-to-week, so please check our open hours before your visit. We are typically open 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM on Wednesdays, 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM on Thursdays, and 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM on Fridays.

Visitor access 

The David Rumsey Map Center is housed inside Green Library. Entry to Green Library requires either a Stanford ID card or visitor registration with a government-issued photo ID, plus having a photo taken at the registration kiosk. Learn more about Stanford University Libraries’ visitor policies. 

Parking 

Parking regulations are enforced 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM on weekdays unless otherwise posted. Stanford is a large campus. Be prepared to traverse at least 0.5 miles from your parking spot to Green Library. Review parking options for visitors in advance of your visit. See Library accessibility for transportation options.

Getting to the Map Center

We are located on the fourth floor of Green Library, with a stairwell entry just off the Munger Rotunda of Green Library’s Bing Wing, which is located on the second floor. Ask at the library entry desk about special elevator access if you need step-free entry.

Map Center visitor policies

Because we are home to rare maps, we do not allow food or drinks (including water), and we do not allow any ink writing utensils in the center. Laptop devices are welcome, and pencils and paper are available for note-taking. Lockers are available for stowing your belongings.

Photography of materials is permitted for personal use but photography and video recording of library spaces is not. See Stanford University Libraries’ photography policy for more information.

Guided tours

We regularly offer guided tours on Fridays. Please register for the tour by 4:00 PM (PST) on the Thursday before the tour.

Researchers
